Art, Myth and Ritual: The Path to Political Authority in Ancient China ReviewArt Myth and Ritual sets out an elegant yet convincing theory regarding the nature of the early Chinese state and the technological, ideological and social foundations on which it rested. By combining archaeology, classical studies and anthropology, Prof. Chang (who is regarded as the international dean of Chinese archaeology by scholars on both sides of the Taiwan strait as well as in Europe and North America) provides his readers with a dynamic view of ancient Chinese statecraft and the religious ideas that made it possible.
This book remains the single most concise statement of Chang's theoretical contribution to the archaeology of the Chinese Bronze Age. It is also simply written, well-illustrated and an excellent beginning point for the serious student of Chinese archaeology.
With Chang's magnum opus: "The Archaeology of Ancient China" sadly out of print (at time of writing), readers must make do with this volume to get a sense of his scope of vision, analytical depth and anthropological insight.
As one of K.C.s final generation of students, I must admit to a certain bias. However, it is my professional and personal opinion that this book is still one of the best works on Chinese archaeology in any language.Art, Myth and Ritual: The Path to Political Authority in Ancient China Overview

China's Imperial Past: An Introduction to Chinese History and Culture ReviewThis book is clearly written and covers competently a broad range of topics. The author follows a topical format (as opposed to a strictly chronological) and discusses in turn general political history, social and political structures, intellectual life, arts and literature. All are described fairly well, though the coverage of some personalities is sketchy perhaps because of space limitations. But the author is clearly very knowledge and provides an adequate amount of critical analysis (in addition to the merely descriptive) so that one doesn't lose sight of the bigger picture.China's Imperial Past: An Introduction to Chinese History and Culture Overview

China's Economic Transformation ReviewThis book provides a good deal of moderately valuable information about the Chinese economy. It also has large sections of what seem like pieces of an ordinary introductory econ textbook, which will be tedious to anyone who has taken an econ course without being terribly valuable to those who haven't. The book appears fairly thorough and objective, but not very imaginative or insightful.
One point he makes that I found worth remembering is to point out the similarities between Chinese state ownership of enterprises with U.S. University ownership of companies created to commercialize their research. In both cases the owning institution has a mission very different from commerce, but often allows the enterprise to function as a business. Alas, he doesn't explore the incentive structures that make this often work in China but create monopoly-style inefficiencies when most other governments own businesses.China's Economic Transformation Overview

China's Tibet: Autonomy or Assimilation ReviewI read Warren Smith's book with much interest. To my knowledge no
specific work has been published dealing with China's efforts to
assimilate Tibet and to rewrite Tibetan history to conform to this new
reality. The chapters laying out the historical background are impressively
thorough. It is quite evident that Smith's understanding of Tibetan
history is not only broad and objective, but is appreciative of the
Tibetan intellectual point of view.
Smith's coverage of the present Sino-Tibetan dialogue, and the lack of
any kind of development in this regard, is probably one of the most
dispassionate, critical and detailed accounts we have to date. This
alone will make the book worth reading for many students of Tibetan
affairs. Smith makes clear that not only is there no hope of "genuine
autonomy" for Tibet as the Dalai Lama has been advocating but that the
very idea of even a minimal autonomous status for Tibet was never one
that had ever been entertained with any degree of sincerity by Beijing,
even when the guarantee of autonomy was first undertaken by Chinese
leaders at the signing of the 17 Point Agreement in 1951. Smith
effectively underlines his contention with a hard-nosed exposition of
the doctrinal realities involved "The ultimate goal of
Marxist-Leninist-Stalinist-Maoist nationalities doctrine was not
autonomy, but assimilation. Autonomy in Marxist-Leninist theory and
practice was a temporary tactic intended to reduce minorities'
resistance to incorporation into Communist states."China's Tibet: Autonomy or Assimilation Overview

China Confidential ReviewHaving served in the State Dept. in Shanghai from 1947 thru 1950
and in Taiwan for 15 years and elsewhere in Asia thru 1976 and
knowing most of those providing the oral histories for this book as well as many of the Chinese principals, I am appalled by the poor proofreading and editing which permited many, many factual inaccuracies to slip through. Also, many of the quoted oral statements are surprisingly superficial and fallacious. Therefore, this book makes very dangerous reading for today's Asian and China scholars since it purports to be the real inside
story straight from the horses mouths whereas its errors can only
generate incorrect history.
If the book is read with this caveat, it does provide very useful background insights for this most important part of 20th. Century experience as well as of the complexities nations face in developing and administering foreign policy. The book is well
laid out and gives a great amount of background information but
the reader should retain a healthy skepticism and draw his own
conclusions realizing that he is reading other's opinions, many
of them recollections of events and years long gone by.China Confidential Overview

China's New Role In Africa ReviewChina has become an economic trading powerhouse, and its trading partners include many nations on the continent of Africa. "China's New Role in Africa" is a scholarly examination of the relationship of China and its African trading partners. Discussing in depth China's foreign relations when it comes to the continent, the importance of oil, what Africa gets in return, human rights concerns, arms trading, and what it all means for world peace, Taylor gives readers much to think about. "China's New Role in Africa" is a grand pick for those who ponder the world's foreign relations when America isn't directly involved.

Doing Business in China ReviewParticularly impressive is the author's approach at presenting the Chinese thought process in such a manner that Westerners can not only understand the Chinese psyche, but respect and learn from it as well. This book was perhaps one of the most enlightening books I have read in a while. There is a a concerted effort to show business protocol and potential avenues of entry, but more importantly this book addresses the fundamental social concepts that need to be FULLY understood before attempting to grow in China.Doing Business in China Overview

Selling China: Foreign Direct Investment During the Reform Era (Cambridge Modern China Series) ReviewI find Prof Huang's "Selling China" much more than just an academic achievement which it is -- with its disciplined arguments supported by a wealth of well-researched facts.
After 18 years of working on the Greater China scene -- most of it foreign investment related, for me, the greatest value of the book is its main theme -- that the large inflow of FDI over the years reflects weaknesses rather than strengths of the Chinese system. It is not just another point of view in the already overcrowded gallery of China commentary. For me, the well-argued and well-researched "unconventional" view answers some of the key China investment related questions at a very practical level, and should have important implications for government policy making and corporate decision making alike.Selling China: Foreign Direct Investment During the Reform Era (Cambridge Modern China Series) Overview

The Foremost Good Fortune ReviewI read this memoir in one sitting. As someone who moved with my husband and young children to Asia, I was hooked immediately. Susan nails the incidental moments - the minutiae - that define a family's transition to a new culture. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has experienced or is anticipating an overseas move with children. However, this aspect of Susan's story only scratches the surface of what makes this book a gem. It is funny at times, poignant at others. If you have grappled with parenting decisions, wondered about the realities of day to day life in China, faced an illness of any kind, or supported someone you love through one, you will find this book hard to put down. It is enlightening, hopeful and unequivocally life affirming. The Foremost Good Fortune Overview

Xinjiang: China's Muslim Borderland (Studies of Central Asia and the Caucasus) Review"Xinjiang: China's Muslim borderland." brings together 15 of the world's experts on Xinjiang, and the Muslim ethnic minorities that live there, and provides for a broad survey of a region of China's north-west that has been, for centuries, at the very crossroads of civilisations.
Contributors such as Dru Gladney, James Millward and Gardner Bovington, all renowned experts, introduce us to this magical, historical and extremely important area of China. An area that for reasons of economics and strategic importance, not to mention it's sheer size, comprising 1/6th of China's landmass, provides many challenges and opportunities for China, none more important than the challenges posed by, and for, the near majority Muslim population.
This book, written by academics, is easily accessible for the non academic and is a perfect overall introduction to Xinjiang and in particular the Uyghur Muslim people. It covers history, economics the environment, military considerations and important social issues, the latter the main reason for Xinjiang coming to the world's attention in the late 1980's
This book, first published in 2004 and unfortunately yet to be revised, was borne out of the world's need to understand Xinjiang especially as it concerns the Uyghur people and China's policy towards them. A policy that has resulted in many mass clashes leading to severe oppression, imprisonments, religious persecution, executions and death in "strike hard" programmes and Han in-migration as China attempts to Sinocise the region.
The book, being seven years old, obviously is dated in terms of statistical data provided but, that aside, the issues canvassed are no less relevant today as they were then.
If you read no other book on Xinjiang you will have a more than acceptable level of appreciation of this fantastic region and it's peoples. @ChinaLetter

China (Kaleidoscope Kids Books (Williamson Publishing)) ReviewI bought this book to give as birthday presents for my goddaughter and a friend from her adoption group. Both girls were born in Hunan, China and I always like to get them presents that help them learn about and feel proud of their Chinese heritage. The book is full of interesting information and activities that I know they will enjoy. One caveat for anyone buying this as a gift for an adopted child -- there is a brief mention of China's one child policy, so you may want to discuss this with her parents to be sure they are prepared -- or choose -- to discuss this issue with their child!China (Kaleidoscope Kids Books (Williamson Publishing)) Overview

China: Understanding Its Past ReviewThis is a well-researched and very usable book for teachers of students in grades 7-12. I bought this book and used it as a supplemental text for our unit on China and students and their parents raved about it. The sections on culture in China were particularly useful for middle school students: daughters, sons, parents in traditional China. The major highlight was its fair and deep analysis of Footbinding in China. Students come away with a very good knowledge of Chinese history and culture. I recommend this book without reservation!China: Understanding Its Past Overview

OSS in China: Prelude to Cold War ReviewI have had a deep interest for some time in how the US government got sucked into the quagmire of intervention in SE Asia in the fifties. If you read the French sources, they blame the triumph of Ho Chi Minh on the materiel support given him by the OSS missions at the end of the war. If you read the massive work by Archimedes Patti, the support did not make any difference. But that aside, when one starts pulling on the strings of why the OSS mercy missions of 1945 to Vietnam were sent, it descends from the various US intelligence and special operations agencies working in the area, and a very tangled web leads back to China--with its US Army-Navy rivalries, US- British rivalries, plus the US State Dept vs. many of the others. Then throw in the Free French and the Vichy governments. And some of these folks lost sight of the fact they were guests and not in a conquered country.Until the release of the OSS records to the National Archives a few years ago, much of this was hidden except glimpsed in a few memoirs. But the OSS side and the State Department side and the other US departments ' sides are unavoidably biased views for and against each other and the Chinese sides-the Reds and the Nationalists. Without seeing from the Chinese side one cannot balance the view point. The author has done this. He has been able to use the memoirs and histories now available from mainland China to develop this history as well as can be expected this close on. Sometimes it takes a hundred years for everyone to finally agree and sometimes there never is a consensus. We have not sorted out our Civil War yet. How can we expect the Chinese to have done so when even the territorial and economic consequences are still being worked out. This book is an essential tool for beginning that task. It makes clear what all the turf quarrels were between the War Department, the Navy Department, the OSS, the 14th Air Force (Claire Chennault, a profit without honor in his own country, who had to go to China to prove his theories of air combat.), the British and French governments, and the Chinese Nationalists, whose guests they all were. If you like organizational histories of the sort of who said what when then this is for you. If you want daring tales of dauntless deeds then look elsewhere. This is an extremely well written and thoroughly researched book but it is not a shoot 'em up operational history. There are many good histories and memoirs of those. Stratton's SACO history is still quite useful but hard to find. (By the way, I'm still looking for that Vietnam history.) Carter RilaOSS in China: Prelude to Cold War Overview

Landscape and Power in Early China: The Crisis and Fall of the Western Zhou 1045-771 BC ReviewThis book is a splendid tour de force of historical and textual analysis. Armed with a vast knowledge of China, the author retells the history of one of its most fascinating dynasties, shattering not a few myths along the way. He makes his case masterfully, and by the end the reader is left with a deep and abiding feeling of satisfaction.
Yet surprisingly enough for a book as dense as this one, it reads like a thriller, complete with perplexing mysteries, royal intrigue, and a fantastic cast of characters. I was able to read most of it in one sitting.Landscape and Power in Early China: The Crisis and Fall of the Western Zhou 1045-771 BC Overview

China: A Macro History ReviewRay Huang's "China: A Macro History" kept me up for a few nights in a row. Dr. Huang posed an extremely ambitious goal to explain fundamental differences of Western and Chinese civilizations, and to explore trends of Chinese government, military, cultural and religious institutions as they develop from legendary to modern times. The book is organized in chapters, each covering roughly a time span of the major dynasty of the Middle Kingdom. Concentration is more on trends (thus the title word "macro") then on events, more on developments of concepts rather then careers. People and events are represented inasmuch as they represent the underlining trend. As such every dynasty rise and eventual fall is represented, with credits due to each for the developments of Chinese nation. The institution of monarchy is a fascinating blend of ritual, unreal and fantastic, and idealistic, with an impressive organizational achievement in management of the country with the base of millions of agrarian households.
The only grievance I have with the book is that understandably enough Dr. Huang had to skip over a lot of material (or he would risk leaving us with yet another "The Decline and fall of the Roman Empire"); however in doing so he is rarely consistent, e.g. not explaining the elemental precepts of Confucianism, organization of Chinese army and bureaucracy; and fundamental principles behind state examinations. All those, however, can be gotten from other sources, and as such will tempt the reader to explore more.China: A Macro History Overview

The Snow Lion and the Dragon: China, Tibet, and the Dalai Lama ReviewBear in mind that my background in Chinese and Tibetan history and politics is negligible. And that the fate of the Tibetan people is being considered. That said, this seemed at least a very readable account. I assume the historical facts in this book can be cross-checked for accuracy. As to Goldstein's analysis (done before 1998) of the future, he explored possibilities for compromise that, to date, seem not to have occurred. He also expresses concern about the possibility of further violence if an adequate compromise is not reached.
When looking into the Tibetan problem, I found primarily decidedly pro-Chinese or pro-Tibetan positions. Compromise may seem unreasonable. Since Goldstein appears to be trying to find a middle position, this book may be useful for anyone trying to get a less biased view of this issue. The presentation seemed clear enough that it could serve as an introduction to this issue, although it may well also be of use to readers with a more advanced background in this area. Goldstein seems to be primarily offering input and not conclusions, so whatever your position on the Tibet issue, this book may be informative. The Snow Lion and the Dragon: China, Tibet, and the Dalai Lama Overview
