Art, Myth and Ritual: The Path to Political Authority in Ancient China ReviewArt Myth and Ritual sets out an elegant yet convincing theory regarding the nature of the early Chinese state and the technological, ideological and social foundations on which it rested. By combining archaeology, classical studies and anthropology, Prof. Chang (who is regarded as the international dean of Chinese archaeology by scholars on both sides of the Taiwan strait as well as in Europe and North America) provides his readers with a dynamic view of ancient Chinese statecraft and the religious ideas that made it possible.
This book remains the single most concise statement of Chang's theoretical contribution to the archaeology of the Chinese Bronze Age. It is also simply written, well-illustrated and an excellent beginning point for the serious student of Chinese archaeology.
With Chang's magnum opus: "The Archaeology of Ancient China" sadly out of print (at time of writing), readers must make do with this volume to get a sense of his scope of vision, analytical depth and anthropological insight.
As one of K.C.s final generation of students, I must admit to a certain bias. However, it is my professional and personal opinion that this book is still one of the best works on Chinese archaeology in any language.Art, Myth and Ritual: The Path to Political Authority in Ancient China Overview

The Case of the Firecrackers (Chinatown Mystery) ReviewThe title of my book is The Case of the Firecrackers by Laurence Yep.
Lily, her great-aunt Tiger Lil, her brother Chris, Chris's girlfriend Evie, and 'Grandpa Eng' are enjoying a nice dinner when, suddenly, the phone rings. Lily, Evie, Chris, and Tiger Lil are on their way to meet handsome teen heartthrob, Clark Tom!
While visiting Clark, he asks the group if they wouldn't mind playing a small role in his next Chinatown movie. Of course, they all oblige and are quickly dressed and whisked away to the set. Norm, the director of the movie, had hired a gang member to play the murderer of Clark Tom. While the scene was rolling, the gang member got ready to shoot blanks. Bang! Instead of shooting blanks, he shot real bullets! Tempers began to flare, fuses ignited as the gang member is arrested and hauled away for the attempted murder of Clark Tom. But Tiger Lil doesn't think he's the one who exchanged the blanks for the real bullets. Auntie Tiger Lil and her crew follow a trail of firecrackers, gangs, bad food, and gambling to dead ends. How will they ever find the real culprit?
Overall, I give this book a 3 out of 5. The book uses great words and a climax that never seems to end. There is a similar book called Maude, but that story was about a witch trying to put a spell on a little girl. It related to The Case of the Firecrackers because they both used firecrackers, spells, and mysterious people in the plot to add suspense. Once you start to read this book, I guarantee you won't be able to put it down! Happy reading! The Case of the Firecrackers (Chinatown Mystery) Overview

C Is for China ReviewI really enjoyed reading this book and looking at the photos that accompany each letter of the alphabet. The author also did the photos and what makes this book stand out among the other Chinese ABC books is that the photos are not the glossy touristy looking photos of wealthy families and places like the Imperial or Summer palace. But instead the photos of China's people doing their day to day things. The author states that the photos where taken in Guangxi, Yunnan & Shanxi. He wanted to show that the Chinese People are hard working, they have a strong commitment to their families, religion, history, customs both modern and traditional and their hope for the future. Each photo has on the right side of the page the Chinese character for the photo each letter represents. I would have like to have seen translation on how to correctly say each word. Other than that small thing I think this is a terrific book to have in your home library or for those of you who have children from Guangxi, Ynnan or Shanxi.
Here are the letters and what each represents:
A - Abacus
B - Bicycle
C - China & it's rivers
D - Dragon
E - Excercise
F - Fengzheng ( A popular flying kite)
G - Garden
H - Herbal Medicine
I - Incense
J - Jade
K - Kitchen
L - Lanterns
M - Markets
N - Noodles
O - Old (the older generation)
P - Picture
Q - Qingming Festival
R - Remminbi - Chinese Currency
S - Singing
T - Tiaoqi ( Chinese Checkers )
U - Uniform
V - Vegetables
W - Wenzi ( Chinese Writing )
X - Xiao ( A Musical instrument from ancient times )
Z - Zen ( Major Religion commonly known as Chan )

Women in Early Imperial China (Asia/Pacific/Perspectives) ReviewI picked up _Women in Imperial China_, expecting a relatively straight forward history and analysis of the role and place of women during the QIn (221 - 206 BCE) and Han (202 BCE - 220 CE) dynasties. What I got was much more complex, nuanced and detailed than I could have possibly imagined. In his introduction, Hinsch explains that even under the Han China was incredibly varied by region: "every hundred li there were different habits; every thousand li there were different customs; Households had different governments; people wore distinguishing clothes." (Mind you, this is a China much smaller than that of the 21st century.) Added to this are "varied and often contradictory" attitudes towards women even in the same region. In spite of these tremendous obstacles, a comprehensible historical narrative has been written that gives a richly detailed and incredibly nuanced perspective of the role of women during this 400 year (221 BCE - 220 CE) time span.
To help non-Asian specialists such as myself make sense of the variety of roles and perspectives of women, the book is organized topically, with chapters on Kinship, Wealth and Work (detailing social class differences), Law, Government, Education, and Ritual. Regardless of topic, Hinsch finds a number of common threads common to women: how Chinese understanding of gender shapes societal roles from the economic interdependence of genders (in work, regardless of social class and marriage) and the social status of women (within households and, by extension, the empire), to the importance of women's participation in the spiritual life of ancient China. Much to my suprise, the place and role of women was much more vibrant, active and highly regarded than I had imagined.
For those interested in womens' studies, ancient Chinese history or the Han dynasty in particular, I strongly recommend this book. For the armchair historian, Hinsch does not presuppose knowledge of Chinese culture and history and goes to great lengths to explain and "break down" many of the terms and concepts alien to a western audience. It is a fascinating read.Women in Early Imperial China (Asia/Pacific/Perspectives) Overview

TEA THAT BURNS: A Family Memoir of Chinatown ReviewMy mother grew up in the mining camps at the turn of the century, (1900) - it would be wonderful if more of the Chinese descendents would write their stories - it was surely a life of great hardship, and a history that needs to be shared. This is a wonderful story of family and life, societal views, prejudice and pain. Many expressions I heard throughout my childhood referred to the Chinese..."...didn't have a Chinaman's chance."..."...the rule was that the sun was not to set on any Chinese in town..." - what torment these people had to endure - yet we have very little literature on this subject. Mr. Hall has provided us with a wonderful, informative read and some true-life views that U.S.History certainly needs.TEA THAT BURNS: A Family Memoir of Chinatown Overview

Heaven is High and the Emperor Far Away: Old Guangzhou and China Trade ReviewGuangzhou, or Canton as it has been called for centuries, suffers in the popularity race that favors Western language books about Shanghai and Beijing. Ms. Garrett has addressed this shortcoming in her book Heaven is High and the Emperor Far Away. The book presents a historical and cultural overview of a city that has been at the cross roads of trade, commerce and diplomacy between the Middle Kingdom and the outside world since the Han dynasty. Her book brings to life the flavour of Old Canton as an outpost for European traders from the era of the Co-hong trade to the "Canton Trade Fairs" of the People's Republic. In the course of her book, Ms. Garrett provides us with many insightful glimpses into the prior identity of neighborhoods, temples and streets of Guangzhou. It is both useful for the armchair reader and the urban explorer who wants to experience more deeply a city typically slighted in most guide books. The book is lavishly illustrated and is a valuable addition to anyone's library about Old China.Heaven is High and the Emperor Far Away: Old Guangzhou and China Trade Overview

Three Names of Me ReviewThis book was very appropriate for our family. My daughter is 7 years old, and I adopted her from China when she was 10 months. She is very curious about her origins, including her birth mom. This book directly addresses the fact that in addition to a Chinese name and, in many cases, a newly given name when adopted, you also have a third name which was "whispered" by your birth mom. So my only caveat would be to read this book before reading it with your child to be sure that you are both ready to deal with the questions and emotions that are surely to follow.Three Names of Me Overview

New China, New Art Reviewup-to-date, well-written, and providing enough historical background to understand the artworks. The author knows his subject well, and his interpretation is often clear yet nuanced. I especially like the fact that, given the vast scope of the book, the author still pays close attention to individual artists, and talks about both the techniques & styles and the content & social implication of the artworks.
The division of chapters is a bit too obvious and sometime not entirely appropriate. But it's still one of the best intro-level books on contemporary Chinese art printed in the US (or anywhere). And given its size & quality of the images, it's very reasonably priced.New China, New Art Overview

The Art of Silver Jewellery: From the Minorities of China, The Golden Triangle, Mongolia and Tibet ReviewAn excellent overview of the silver jewelry of the minority tribes of China, it also addresses clothing and textiles. The photos are superb, with some elements shown larger than actual size. This book would be of interest to both collectors and artisans. The items depicted are from the Rene van der Star Collection. Chinese Fans: Artistry and Aesthetics (Arts of China) ReviewThis book on fans is written from a purely Chinese point of view. It deals not with the fans China made for the west (Mandarin fans and elaborate ivory brise fans), but with those that were made for local use and taste.
First we are given a history of Chinese fans dating back to prehistoric times, quoting numerous examples of ancient fans found in archaeological digs over the last 50-60 years. It also deals with the methods of making fans -both for sticks and leaves and how they have changed over the centuries. There is also a section of painters noted for their fans whose work is highly esteemed within China. This portion of the book, almost more than any other, gives a good feel for how knowledge the West lacks on native Chinese fans. Many 'Great' artists and calligraphers are mentioned that have almost no references in Western art books on Chinese art.
My only disappointment with this small volume is that many of the masterpieces mentioned in the text do not necessarily have corresponding photos. The author seems to assume that the reader would be familiar with these artists. While this may hold true in China this book almost breaks new ground in the west in dealing with Chinese fan painting and manufacturing in English. This book should be part of any fan collectors reference works if you have an interest in Chinese fans.

The Arts of China After 1620 (Yale University Press Pelican History of Art) ReviewI have recently started reading this book, having 'browsed' through it earlier. I've read the chapters on Painting and on Snuff Bottles thoroughly. It is well written, but the Chinese Painting chapters are very scholarly and 'dense' (not easily absorbed, at least by me), a bit hard going.
And a quote in French, without a translation, is a bit stupid. Not everyone is fluent in French (I know I'm not), and it is irritating not to know what this quote says.
Other chapters are much easier to comprehend, and all the material is very informative. There are some minor errors in the Snuff Bottle chapter, but on the whole, it is very good.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Arts in China in this period, especially to serious students of the subject. The Arts of China After 1620 (Yale University Press Pelican History of Art) Overview

Chinese Bridges: Living Architecture from China's Past ReviewIf there ever were structures that should follow the maxim that form follows function it would have to be bridges. It is impossible to imagine a more practical structure. Yet, "Chinese Bridges" shows what happens when the Chinese bring their own romantic, over the top aesthetic to the art of bridge building. The result is architectural intoxication of the highest order.
"Chinese Bridges" begins by cataloging the different styles of bridges and then moves to the spiritual dimensions the Chinese embued in their bridges. It concludes with detailed studies of individual bridges. These bridges range from humble vernacular bridges in China's heartland to the beautifully ornate bridges of the country's elites.
Ronald Knapp has been studying the rural architecture of China since 1965 and is one of foremost historian's of China's vernacular architecture. He is a strong writer and his text is well complimented by Chester Ong's beautiful photographs. "Chinese Bridges" is a complementary volume to Knapp's "Chinese Houses". Both are beautifully produced volumes and are a must purchase for fans of Chinese and vernacular architecture. These are two of the finest books in my collection. Highly recommended.Chinese Bridges: Living Architecture from China's Past Overview

Chinese Porcelain: Art, Elegance, and Appreciation (Art of China) (Arts of China) ReviewKelun Chen has provided a wonderful essay and overview on Chinese ceramics in this rather tiny volume. The best thing about the book how it demonstrates ways to think about China and its porcelain products from antiquity through the end of the Qing (Ching) Dynasty in 1911. One learns to think of porcelain secondarily in terms of period, but primarily in terms of kiln sites, clay, glaze and color. This is much the opposite of the beginner's or American antiquarian's (my own) typical tendency. The brief 80-page text is rich with details and insights, many of which are sparsley but adequately illustrated in the accompanying photographs in color and black & white. A book such as this must be evaluated (and "starred") in terms of what it intends to be: in this case a thoughtful overview in limited space, not a reference text. There are no indices of markings or summary observations, and the photographs occur with widely varying proximity to the related text, which fails to indicate the illustration under discussion. It takes only modest effort to find them. But the book still delivers an intelligent and thoughtful discussion that a person can go back to and refer to over time, while studying more advanced, ambitious and comprehensive works. A real bargain, and not necessarily a beginner's book. It will stay in my library on ceramics. For a tiny volume, it is really a five star work, and rated at four here only because of the limitations of space provided by the publication series.Chinese Porcelain: Art, Elegance, and Appreciation (Art of China) (Arts of China) Overview

Lon Po Po: A Red-Riding Hood Story from China ReviewLike film awards, book awards rarely go to an artist's best work. Usually if a picture book has won a Caldecott medal you can sift through the author and illustrator's other books and inevitably find something far more deserving. This is true of almost every author/illustrator, save one. Ed Young has had a varied and fabulous career. From his spectacular "Seven Blind Mice" to his insipid and poorly drawn "Turkey Girl" he's run the gamut from "Yippee!" to "Bleach!". But his Caldecott winning "Lon Po Po" falls squarely into the "Yippee!" category. To my mind, it is his best work. A stunning edition of the Chinese tale of Lon Po Po, this story weaves elements of Grimm Fairy Tales with "Little Red Riding Hood" and comes out swinging.
One day a mother leaves her three daughters to visit their grandmother on her birthday. Before she leaves she instructs the girls to lock the doors soundly after she is gone. The girls do so but a wily wolf has overheard that the mother will be leaving. The wolf disguises himself as an old woman and knocks on the door. When asked who he is, he responds that he is their grandmother (or "Po Po") come to stay with them. The children foolishly let the animal in and he quickly douses the lights. After many questions about the supposed grandmother's bushy tail and sharp claws the eldest and cleverest daughter catches sight of the wolf's snout and must find a way to save her sisters. Not only does she succeed, but she also finds a way to get rid of the wolf forever.
In the dedication of this book, Ed Young writes, "To all the wolves of the world for lending their good name as a tangible symbol for our darkness". This was written in part, I suspect, to appease the wolf lovers of the world. Much like the old fairy tales of European folklore, this tale has its fair share of violence. The wolf's end, for example, is a particularly nasty way to go. And because it has been created so realistically in this book, I suspect that there are probably some animal advocates who will take offense at his death. Nonetheless, we're not dealing with reality here, people. We're dealing with fairy tales and in these stories wolves are (as Young himself said) representative of our own evil.
The story is translated by Young himself and is done beautifully. The words in this tale sing. Yet even the best laid plotting can be undone by poor illustrations. In this particular case, you've nothing to fear because Young has bent over backwards to bring you absolute breathtaking beauty. Combining watercolors with pastels, the book is simultaneously gorgeous and frightening. It may take a couple readings, but if you look carefully in some of these pictures you will find wolf images hidden in the landscapes and backgrounds of a great many scenes. The first spread in this book is of the mother leaving her children. As she goes, the land beneath her feet is shaped like that of a wolf's nose, the cottage the eye of the animal. Often the pictures are separated into threes, giving the book a formal feeling. Finally, the pictures of the girls and their enemy are excellent. Sometimes the merest of glimpses of the wolf are scary enough to drill home what a threat he is. You really do feel scared for the children when they cuddle up with their supposed grandmother in bed, only to find her to be a hungry beastie.
The "Little Red Riding Hood" story is all well and good in and of itself, but it always lacked kick. "Lon Po Po" has more than kick. It has bite. It will enrapture small children and give them tangible forms for their darkest fears. It will hypnotize any reader, drawing them effortlessly into its deeply interesting story. Of all the Caldecott winning picture books of the last 15 years, this one is my favorite, hands down.

Framing Famous Mountains: Grand Tour and Mingshan Paintings in Sixteenth-century China ReviewStarting in the 16th-century, well-to-do Chinese engaged in what Li-tsui compares to the Grand Tour engaged in by Europeans in the 18th and 19th centuries. The comparison is meant primarily for orientation, however, for Western readers to the author's skilled management of the complexities of her subject which is at the heart of the history and subject matter of Chinese painting. Only a cursory exposure to Chinese painting, and one cannot help but see the central place of mountains in it.
The ubiquitous mountains in Chinese painting are not simply to satisfy an appreciation for the world of nature. The countless paintings with mountains are not simply "nature paintings." As Li-tsui skillfully shows, "Over the centuries [beginning in the 16th] 'famous mountains' were perceived as the abode of gods, a set of spatial symbols contested between different systems of sacred geography." In different periods and as portrayed by different artists, the mountains variously symbolized a realm of the sacred where individuals could retreat for communion with the divine and transformation; temporary retreat as if to a remote, peaceful monastery; physical settings associated with and inspiring the spirituality of Buddhism, Confucianism, and other Asian beliefs; the centrality and majesty of the state as a site for state sacrifices; and popular destinations for pilgrims.
Li-tsui uses three notable 16th-century painters of mountains: Ye Cheng (first decades of the 16th century), Xie Shichen (1487-1561), and Song Xu (1525-1606). Her historical and artistic study exceeds the particular treatment of these however by having the dimensions of a cultural study. The author is interested in the mountain paintings not only because of their prevalence in Chinese painting, but also for how they reflect changes--sometimes subtle changes which are more like colorations--in Chinese culture.
Readers of the art/cultural study come away with not only an understanding of the reasons for mountains as a predominant, abiding subject for much of the history of Chinese painting, but also an eye for the varying, often subtle tonalities, perspectives, compositions, proportions, and styles in portraying mountains and the meanings of these. This is a work of keen and knowledgeable art analysis which is fundamental with respect to its topic (or interplay of topics) and which also coincides with the growing place of Chinese antiquities, including art, along with modern and contemporary Chinese art in the worlds of museums, auctions, scholarship, and the art trade. Li-tsui is an associate professor of humanities at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Twenty-five color plates and 70 black-and-white illustrations give good visual references for the varied types of mountain painting and details of them in her art criticism.
