Aching For Beauty: Footbinding in China ReviewEven though the topic is a fascinating one. I struggled to complete this book. The author has a PhD in Comparative Literature and according to the book jacket, teaches creative writing course.
I'm not sure how such an interesting topic could be written in such a dry manner, especially by someone who teaches "creative" writing. This book actually reads more like a doctoral thesis than a book for the mainstream audience. The author has written about the history of footbinding, eroticism and violence in China and how these are all entwined. The too-technical, overly-referenced, dense, academic writing style of the author has not done these topics justice.Aching For Beauty: Footbinding in China Overview

My Journey in Mystic China: Old Pu's Travel Diary ReviewJohn Blofeld's account of his travels in China during the 1930's & 40's are translated for the first time and it is a cause for celebration for all Sinophiles. His words are a visual canvas of pastels and rich colors, smells, and tastes of a China no longer to be seen. Blofeld comes across as a gentle loving soul that if one were to accept reincarnation as a fact, then this British born man was truly Chinese in his soul. Besides a journal of his travels, he also offers folk stories and accounts of inexplicable sights and people he encountered along the way.
Blofeld is a fine writer of great subtlety and nuance. Normally I am a quick reader but like a fine tea I wanted to savor each page and chapter of this book. The translation by Daniel Reid is superlative. Reid's deep friendship and admiration he cultivated in the last years of Blofeld's life imbues this work with a warmth and charm too little seen in memoirs today.
For those interested in the history of China, Chinese folk life, Taoism, Confucianism or Buddhism this book is recommended. I know this is a work that I will return to every so often like a visit with a good friend and raconteur.My Journey in Mystic China: Old Pu's Travel Diary Overview

Michelin Green Guide Taiwan (Green Guide/Michelin) Review
This pocket travel guide to Taiwan is fairly good, but not excellent.
It's information is pretty much accurate and updated. It's very informative in the aspects of etiquette, which is seldom seen in other travel guides to Taiwan.
Taiwan is a very diversified island, and in this sense this pocket guide omits a lot info. It's somewhat unenviable in all pocket or compact travel guide. The good thing is that the info left in it pretty much match what local Taiwanese people feel about their island.
It's still a good one. Especially for traveler who only want to stay in each of Taiwanese City for just few days, it could be useful because most key info provided and not overwhelming traveler's mind.
One important thing, it doesn't explain very clearly about how to take public and private transportation in Taiwanese cities in general or in each city or between cities. All who want to visit Taiwan may have the need for the more clear and detailed sources somewhere else.
