Washington's China: The National Security World, the Cold War, And the Origins of Globalism (Culture, Politics, and the Cold War) ReviewI am torn between giving this book a three or four star review. Peck's argument centers around how Washington saw the division between the Soviet Union and Communist China. However, I am not sure if Peck offers an argument. Instead, he tracks the US National Security Council perspectives on how China would emerge if it continued down its path of nationalism. He offers commentator and arguments from George Kennan, but Peck's analysis seems to come up short. That being said, the book reads well from a historical aspect. Readers who want to know the mindset of Washington as they watched the Soviet Union falter in keeping China under their imperialist thumb would find this book interesting; Peck hones on to the late 1940s-1960s. I think Peck stops short of not including a chapter on President Nixon's rapprochement with China; he ends with the Johnson administration. This would have better contributed to Peck's argument of China's origins of globalism (as stated in the title of the book). Overall, this book was worth the read, but I am hesitant on offering my recommendation as it left me wanting more.Washington's China: The National Security World, the Cold War, And the Origins of Globalism (Culture, Politics, and the Cold War) Overview

China and the Vietnam Wars, 1950-1975 (The New Cold War History) ReviewMr. Zhai's contribution to Cold War history is a worthy addition to any CW buff's collection, since China's role in the conflict has always been a mix of "Yellow Peril" paranoia, rumor and biased commentary. It is a sound summary of the initially cozy, then increasingly frosty relations between the two communist Asian nations. However, being familiar with many of the observations made in this book from other sources, I was hoping for a more cogent analysis of the synergy between the radicalization of Mao's vision of perpetual revolution and the Indochinese wars. For example, did the Cultural Revolution hinder or help the Vietnamese, and what were their perceptions? Did China encourage Pol Pot's intransigence vis-a-vis Hanoi because of ideological affinity or just plain spite? How did the Ussuri River clashes affect the Soviet supply link to Hanoi? China Builds the Bomb (Studies in International Security and Ar) ReviewA rich and facinating account of how China made the decision to build the bomb. The origins of the Chinese nuclear program were made during the Eisenhower administration desion to reduce American troops in Korea. During this period, Eisenhower decided to increase American strategic forces (nuclear), thus adding to Chinese insecurity. According to the book, Mao wanted a paper tiger and the nuclear bomb was the answer.
The book also details how Soviet advisors provided the Chinese with baseline technical information for theroretical experimentation and fabrication of the first bomb. The book makes clear that the Sino-Soviet alliance was a shakey mutual military agreement at best. Moscow wanted total control of Soviet/Chinese military operations and how Chinese military leaders resisted these attempts by Moscow and decided to expel Soviet advisors. The book also explains how the CIA blew the call: They predicated a pultonium core and in fact the Chinese built a uranium-235 core.

Mao's China and the Cold War (The New Cold War History) ReviewChen Jian's book for a number of years has been the standard "must read" text for any student of modern Chinese history. An excellent example of "new Cold War" scholarship, the book makes excellent use of newly available Chinese primary sources and secondary materials to explain policy making of the PRC leadership. The book's central argument is that Mao's endless pursuit of "continous revolution" in China defined his priorities in foreign policy, so that essentially a confrontational foreign policy became a necessary backdrop to domestic political developments. The argument has its own critics; one may argue, for instance, that the domestic politics first approach is unduly Sino-centric, and ignores the dynamic of China's relationship with other powers, notably the US and the USSR. But for better or worse, Chen Jian's argument cannot be ignored. The book is nicely written, and I had my undergraduate students digest it with apparent ease. The Dragon and the Foreign Devils: China and the World, 1100 B.C. to the Present ReviewThis book provides a highly readable outline of China's history within a framework of external events that have impacted on China. It provides a good starting point for anyone who is seeking to understand influences on China and the way in which it chooses to interact with the world.
I don't believe that it is possible to try to understand China without developing some understanding of the cultural and philosophical influences that have shaped this country over the past three thousand years. Professor Gelber covers many such influences and, in addition, provides references for those who seek more detail.
In addition to providing context from the past, Professor Gelber discusses some of the future challenges for China. This includes some analysis of the challenges of governing a country with such an enormous population.
Highly recommended to all who seek to understand the country that is China and its place in the world.

The Black Bats: CIA Spy Flights over China from Taiwan 1951-1969 ReviewAuthor Chris Pocock, well-known for his mastery of the story of the U-2 spyplane, must be congratulated for getting this facinating and almost totally unknown story published in English (an initial version of this story was researched, written and published in Chinese by aviation historian Clarence Fu, aka Fu Jing Ping). As the subtitle says, this is the true story of daring clandestine flights by the flight crews of the Air Force of the Republic of China, based on Taiwan, deep into the territory of their arch enemy, the Peoples Republic of China. There was clearly nothing 'cold' about this chapter of the Cold War. Many of the aircraft - CIA-supplied B-17's, P2V Neptunes, A-26's and others - from Taiwan were shot down when the Communists put up increasing effective defenses to stop the intruders. The flights by the Chinese 34th Squadron - The "Black Bats" - were conducted to infiltrate intelligence agents and paramilitary teams, to drop psychological warfare leaflets, and to collect electronic intelligence (ELINT) on China's radar systems. It's not really possible to tell which information came from Mr. Fu and what Mr. Pocock added to the earlier Chinese version, but we are very fortunate that Mr. Pocock got this book published in English. It's a great story, well told, full of important details, and facinating (and very rare) photos. Very highly recommended, if not essential reading, for those interested in the Cold War, clandestine operations, the CIA, exotically-modified aircraft (including gorgeous glossy black P-3's), and the 'war' fought between the Nationalist Chinese on Taiwan and the Chinese Communists in the 1950s and 1960s.The Black Bats: CIA Spy Flights over China from Taiwan 1951-1969 Overview

Honorable Survivor: Mao's China, McCarthy's America and the Persecution of John S. Service ReviewI greatly enjoyed and highly recommend Honorable Survivor. The last time I lost this much sleep over a book it was Red October. Lynne Joiner wrote a great novel. Except it's history. When I took history in high school it was boredom incarnate. I guess Lynne didn't take that class. I have spent time in China and was immediately able to connect with the story she tells. I knew pieces of it but have never had the opportunity to see it all come together - and she does a great job of bringing all the pieces together. The only problem with making a movie out of John Service's life would be trying to fit this story into so short a time. Last thought: there are few novelists who could create so complex a plot. This book should solve about a third of your Christmas gift list.
Disclosure: I met Lynne Joiner in Shanghai when I was running a business there in the 90's. I think I am on her friends list. I know she spent much of the past decade on this book. It was worth the wait.

Cold War Submarines: The Design and Construction of U.S. and Soviet Submarines, 1945-2001 ReviewI just received my copy of the long-awaited book "Cold War Submarines: US & Soviet Design & Construction" by Norman Polmar and Kenneth Moore. I found I could not put it down, and it was well worth the wait. The authors spent years interviewing key figures and reading material from both sides of the Cold War. It starts just after the Second World War, and looks at each side's diesel and exotic propulsion plants and designs. Early submarine cruise missile and ballistic missile programs on both sides are detailed. In the section on submerged speed, the US Albacore and Skipjack class are highlighted, as is the early Soviet Papa class and the Alfa class. The book examines each generation of nuclear submarines, both attack and missile firing, on the two sides (US & Soviet). The design decisions and compromises made with each class are detailed. The text is complemented with some excellent photographs. Several but not all of the very good photos are familiar to those of us who have massive sub book collections, but will probably be new to most with "casual" submarine interests. There are newly drawn, superb line drawings of both US and Soviet submarines throughout the book, complete with some (non-classified) details of internal layouts. These drawings include some "might have been" designs. Such long sought after details as the 1960's CONFORM submarine, a truly remarkable design concept are covered, and there is a picture of a model of the submarine (now I can die in peace). This is the innovative Concept Formulation submarine that Rickover had killed in favor of the 688 class. In the process of killing the program, he ordered almost all details and documents on CONFORM destroyed. The book also delves into other fascinating topics on both sides, such mini-subs, special purpose submarines, and an amazing section on aircraft carrier submarines (with some unique line drawings!).

The two "gold standard" books in submarine design history are Friedman's two volume account of US Submarines ("US Submarines through 1945" and "US Submarines since 1945") and Polmar's one volume "Submarines of the Russian and Soviet Navies 1718-1990". This book easily belongs with these other volumes. The overall production is extremely good, printed on glossy paper. On a scale of 1-10, I gave it a 15!
