The Party and the Arty in China: The New Politics of Culture (State & Society East Asia) ReviewDespite having one of the corniest names of any academic book i have ever read, Kraus work on the development of art in post-Mao China is an insightful and informative read. Kraus's main object of study is the nexus of society, politics and art, looking at how political change over the last few decades have led to social changes and artistic changes. Development in the world of art, Kraus claims, has created a new source of civil society, a new avenue for applying pressure over and against the state. As modes of expression in the art world have taken on ever riskier and risqué content, China's Party-State has had to find ways to respond and often can't.
Kraus's book is rather accessible for the non-academic reader and this is an important book for anyone interested in the social and political power of art, China in the post-Mao era, and students of civil society. If you like this, further reading on a similar topic in a different context can be found in Eiko Ikegami's Bonds of Civilty. The Party and the Arty in China: The New Politics of Culture (State & Society East Asia) Overview
