On Equal Terms: Redefining China's Relationship with America and the West ReviewTo start, the title of the book, "On Equal Terms", is brilliant. For thousands of years China was The Middle Kingdom, center of culture and commerce. For the past 100 years it's been The American Century. Now, finally, the two can and need to interact and relate on equal terms, to closely cooperate and co-lead on many issues of vital importance for world peace and economic stability.
This book is an easy and excellent read for both those who have only an elementary knowledge of China as well as those well versed in the country. The former will not feel lost in statistics or detail and the latter will find plenty of insights of value and content. Mr. Zheng covers a broad spectrum of areas and topics, yet all are pertinent to achieving a better understanding of China as well as clearing up some popular misconceptions.
In terms of the writing, I most enjoyed the passages where the author used personal experiences to illustrate a point, such as he did in talking about guanxi and mianzi, and wished there could have been more of these included. Unlike another reviewer, I did not think Mr. Zheng needed so many footnotes, it's his personal perspective that is valuable, not the facts and data.
As a proud Chinese American who lived in China for a number of years, I salute the author for contributing to a better understanding between two great nations.On Equal Terms: Redefining China's Relationship with America and the West Overview
