Typhoon and Tempest: The Canadian Story ReviewNo single author has done more to chronicle the contributions of Canadian airmen to the Allied victory in World War II than Hugh Halliday. TYPHOON AND TEMPEST, THE CANADIAN STORY, published by CANAV Books in 1992, details the exploits of Canadian pilots who flew Hawker's brutish Typhoon ground-attack fighter-bomber and its superlative follow-on, the Tempest.
Prior to the creation of 143 (RCAF) Wing, 2nd TAF in January 1944, Canadian Typhoon pilots were scattered throughout RAF squadrons, service that Halliday covers in the book's first chapter. 143 Wing was initially composed of three RCAF squadrons, Nos. 438, 439 and 440, and their combat missions make up the bulk of the book. (One chapter is given over to Tempest ops). Especially revealing is the 'Typhoon Results' chapter that evaluates how effective Typhoon ground-attack ops really were. Appendices include decorations awarded to Canadian Typhoon and Tempest pilots, Tiffies assigned to 143 Wing, fatalities, etc.
The book is exceptionally well-illustrated with photographs, maps and artwork. It's a sobering commentary on Typhoon ops that so many pilot pix end with the notation that they were killed in action. German flak was hellacious!
All in all, TYPHOON AND TEMPEST, THE CANADIAN STORY is a top-notch, well-illustrated and well-written history of the young Canadians who flew Typhoons and/or Tempests in the ETO. Highly recommended.Typhoon and Tempest: The Canadian Story Overview
