China's Use of Military Force: Beyond the Great Wall and the Long March (Cambridge Modern China Series) ReviewAndrew Scobell's book China's Use of Military Force gives Western readers and government professionals a fascinating insight into Communist China's historical use of military power. This book is not overburdened by verbiage and reads quite easily, and makes some potent insights into the mindset of Chinese leaders. With China and Taiwan a ongoing hot button issue, this book is especially relevant.
Scobell argues that the Chinese government's decision making process for military actions has always been one of the "cult of defense". What is unusual about this doctrine is that their notion of self-defense includes aggresive offensive action to counter the possibility of a threat to their borders as well as their Communist leadership. The most notable examples of this are the border war with Vietnam in the 70's and the Chinese intervention in Korea in 1950. Scobell also argues that the "cult of defense" includes internal matters that threaten the stability of the communist leadership, ie Tianamen Square. Despite commonly held beliefs that it is the PLA military leaders who wish for action, in most cases it has been the civilian government pushing for action with the military arguing for restraint.
What does this mean for the future? Scobell believes that the established use of this doctrine makes it more likely that China would act aggresively in the future towards its neighbors, IF it feels that the neighbor's actions threaten them in some manner. It is not quite clear what boundries limit this theory, for example, would the Chinese use military force to secure the entire Spratly Island chain if it believed that other countries would attempt to access its oil fields? Based on Scobell's thesis, the answer would likely be yes. This book is one of the books that is very precious to both of us. Since my husband suffers from some memory loss, this book has helped him remember some of what he has lost. Most importantly he remembers then Capt George Shea Jr. who was his commanding officer. It was shear luck I found the book and you can bet we went out and bought all the other copies we could find. China Marine ReviewE. B. Sledge's "With the Old Breed" is by common consent one of the finest -- if not the finest -- account of the life of a combat infantryman in World War II. At Pelieu and Okinawa, Sledge was one of only 10 men in his Marine company of 240 to escape being wounded or killed. "China Marine" is the follow-up to "With the Old Breed," a lesser work but one that tells of what happened to Sledge after the war.
With Sledge's experience, one would have thought that he would have been among the first among the military to be demobilized after the end of the war with Japan -- but no, he and his colleagues were sent to China to disarm the Japanese soldiers there and to maintain order in several northern Chinese cities. This is Sledge's account of the six months he spent in China. His view is that of a Private First Class -- but an educated and sophisticated PFC, the son of a medical doctor from Mobile, Alabama, and an outstanding writer. He delighted in Peking, fresh food, a clean bunk, light duties, and friendship with the sophisticated Soong family -- but the danger from attack by communist armies was always there.
Sledge goes on to tell of the trauma of his discharge from the Marines and homecoming to Mobile and, very briefly, his long years of struggle with what we call today Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It's a brief book, only 160 pages, and am interesting, beautifully written, account of the decompression of a combat soldier and his return home.
Sledge died in 2001 but he was often quoted in Ken Burn's recent PBS series on World War II. Sledge is a true American hero.

The Big Show: The Greatest Pilot's Story of World War II ReviewI'm glad to see that Clostermann's book is re-printed, as my old Ballantine edition is worn thin.
If you want in-the-cockpit action, you'll find little to rival this memoir, which was compiled from Clostermann's letters to his father during the war. Clostermann began on Spitfire V's, when the going was tough; he ended in Tempests, when the going was even tougher!
Forgive Clostermann's ongoing error in referring to FW-190D's as Ta-152's: it's likely that he used the same terminology as the intelligence services.
I'm fifty. I read my first book on aerial warfare ("The Red Knight of Germany," by Floyd Gibbons) when I was eleven, and there aren't many books in the genre that I haven't read. In an impressive personal library is a tattered old paperback--Clostermann's "The Big Show." Typhoon ReviewAfter reading arguably the most famous sub-novel of all time ('The Hunt For Red October') I was thirsting for pretty much anything that had to do with submarine warfare...unfortunately most of what is available really stinks (except for Michael DiMercurio who is excellent) but when I discovered 'Typhoon' quite by accident, I stumbled upon a fantastic story about the largest undersea machines the world has ever known. The Typhoon class Russian missle submarine is BIG, as long as the American boomers, but TWICE as wide--and 1 ship alone could wreak havoc and kill millions of people with its stretegic ICBM's. What happens within the pages of 'Typhoon' are similar to what almost happened in the Soviet Union at the beginning of Gorbechev's reign when a military coup, afraid that the impending breakup of the country would ruin their career's, nearly toppled the government. In this chilling scenario, a select few Russian military leaders decide to take matters into their own hands by precipitating the entire event by launching missles on their OWN country hoping to place blame in such a way as to stall or completely halt the coming democracy.
I don't mind telling you that this actually put chills down my spine to think that whoever is in charge of these ships actually COULD do something like this. A very sobering thought, indeed. Thank heavens for Admiral Zenko and a life dedicated to preserving peace with the use of the underwater machines he helped to design. Zenko makes the startling discovery of what is about to happen, and without a second thought, hijacks his own submarine and head's out to sea. Another wrinkle is placed within this story when the USS Reno shows up to do their assigned 'spy mission' and tries to make sense of what is happening between two of the largest subs in the world and why they act like they are on opposing teams.
IF you are looking for a hair-raising techno-thriller-adventure, than 'Typhoon' should definitely be ON that list. Simply put, this is an exciting story well told by someone who definitely knows the in's & out's of submarine operations (or does a great job of simulating it).Typhoon Overview
