Provincial Militarism and the Chinese Republic: The Yunnan Army, 1905-25 (Michigan Studies on China) ReviewSutton's book is a salutary example of how China fell into warlordism a century ago. Driven in part by the sheer incompetence of the Chinese Manchu monarchy. The account describes the generals and other persons who struggled for dominance. Regional tensions also played a role. With a rebellious Yunnan army occupying major Szechwanese cities like Chengdu and Chongking. In part aided by both provinces feeling neglected by Peking.
The phenomenon of export militarism is explained. Where troops from one province are garrisoned in another, at the expense of the latter. While not unknown in other nations and other times, it occurs often in this story.
Sutton ends his account with the rise of the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party, and the increasing intrusion of Japan. In this sense, the book can be read as a prelude to a much more terrible struggle that was soon to unfold.
A non-Chinese reader might also gain some understanding and sympathy for the current Beijing government's obsession with maintaining stability in a vast country. The warlords of 1905-25 contributed to bloodshed and a national weakness, that left China vulnerable to invaders.Provincial Militarism and the Chinese Republic: The Yunnan Army, 1905-25 (Michigan Studies on China) Overview
