China: Land of Famine, by Walter H. Mallory, with a Foreword by Dr. John H. Finley ReviewThis book comes from 1926 and the problems it deals with are from a bygone age, but it has some historical interest nonetheless. As John Finley puts it in the Foreword:
"It is a shocking fact that with all of the labor expended and virtues practiced, nearly a fourth of the people of the globe live in a land of famine--not of general famine at any one time nor of continuous famine in any one place, but of famine in one or another province or locality all the time."
The text was authored by the Secretary of the China International Famine Relief Commission, Walter H. Mallory. It was an attempt to grapple with the problems of 80+ years ago, and one prediction of his stands out:
"With the awakening of China will come more civic pride and more community spirit, and these things in turn will make for better living conditions."

That indeed was accomplished by the revolution of 1949, and since then we've seen Deng Xiao-ping's capitalist counter-revolution of 1978 launched on its way, making China over again into a corporate playground. A lot of water has gone under the bridge in all directions since this book was written, with high tides filling up and draining out, but it's still interesting to read as a reminder of how "famine" and "China" were once almost synonymous in the pre-revolutionary era. Given some of the ignorant claims which have been popularized about the post-1949 era this book offers some perspective for understanding where things came from. It's worth picking up if you run across it.China: Land of Famine, by Walter H. Mallory, with a Foreword by Dr. John H. Finley Overview
