A Conflict Perpetuated: China Policy During the Kennedy Years (International History) ReviewThe author necessarily writes with an American slant but does reference Chinese sources where appropriate or accessible. Reading this book in conjunction with other cold war histories does lead one the inevitable conclusion that Kennedy, despite his well-oiled PR machine's attempts to paint him as the consummate liberal, was very much a Cold Warrior, firmly rooted in the reactionary politics of the McCarthy era.
That he did not take advantage of the Laos agreement to thaw relations is touched on, and what we now know of Mao's increasing radicalness makes it unlikely this would have amounted to much. The "Who Lost China" debate, the Chiang Kai-Shek Lobby, the impending Sino-Soviet schism and the Great Leap to Disaster all conspired to make any rapproachment exceedingly difficult for domestic as well as international reasons.
Less sanguine is the discussion about China's influence on the Vietnam entanglement, but certainly Kennedy made his concerns about Southeast Asia being a prime candidate for Red Chines "dominoization" a central theme in public as well as private. What few strands there are to go in this book on the subject do not lend weight to the "He-Woulda-Been-a-Withdrawer" circle of die-hard Kennedy defenders.
Mr. Kochavi has written a succint summary of the internal politics in the young, brash (and recently burned in Cuba) bunch of Ivy league White House intellectuals who, like all Americans before and since, see the world through Anglo-Saxon, Amerocentric lenses.A Conflict Perpetuated: China Policy During the Kennedy Years (International History) Overview
