Drugging A Nation: The Story Of China And The Opium Curse ReviewI have never been one to gloat about the Great British Empire. I have always known that Empires are not about giving, infact the opposite applies, it's all about taking. Money, land, resources, cheap labour and sometimes free labour, as far as slaves are concerned.
So anyone out there who holds British citizenship and thinks the history of Britain is all rosy, this book is a must!
The book was published in 1908 at a time when overseas activities by the empire in Asia were at there height. India and China were the biggest victims of our lust for power and money, where our Christian beliefs at home were forgotten once foreign soil had been reached.
There are parts, in the book, where we have quotes from inside Parliament, from the late 19th century, relating to the actions of our citizens in China, where concern was voiced about the opium trade, this si a great insight into the mind of the British goverment at the time.
As the title says Drugging a NAtion is exactly what we did, we forced it apon a huge nation to the extent where observers sent from Britain witnessed people, in some cities up to 80% of men, 40% wimen and large numbers of young children consuming opium, opium produced and transported by Britain. All of this done with the consent of Parliament. China basically came to a standstill, its people sold everything to feed an ever increasing habit, young and old, rich and poor, opium had no boundaries, it went from the bottom of society right to the top!
China tried unsuccessfully at various times to halt this trade but failed everytime rusulting in huge payments having to be made to Britain to cover cost of lost trade. Also evrytime China lost a battle Britain gained more control over its goverment opening up more of China to this evil drug.
It's all about the balance sheet, the author constantly reminds us, nothing about this trade has anything to do with helping or supplying something of need, BALANCE SHEET!!
China eventually gets a hold of the situation, but years have passed and its people are in one seriously sorry state, millions of pounds have gone to Britain from an already poor country, the infrastructure of China has to be rebuilt, the drug went right to the root of all things Chinese, it's horrific and it has Britains name written all over it, all in the name of MONEY!!
And really I don't think things have changed much today, Iraq, Aphganistan anybody?
An important part of our history that the schools forgot to teach.
