China's Legalists: The Earliest Totalitarians and Their Art of Ruling (New Studies in Asian Culture) ReviewFor Western audiences who are familiar with Machiavelli, Han Fei zi and his fellow Legalists can be considered to be more Machiavellian then Machiavelli, but 2000 years before `The Prince', the Legalists were already consolidating their influence and turning words into action in ancient China's imperial courts. The `realpolitik' influence of the Legalists survives to this day, which sheds valuable light on the pragmatic approaches of modern day Chinese politics.
This very accessible book is indeed a great and rare resource on ancient Chinese jurisprudence and political science. The author is well versed in relevant Chinese histories, and provides excellent comparisons and compilations with other big schools of Chinese intellectual thought - Confucianism, Taoism and Moisim, as well as modern day Marxism.
This is indeed a very interesting feature in the book as Confucianism, being the dominant Chinese (and East Asian) philosophy has co-existed with the equally influential but less publicized Legalism. Yet the Legalists' draconian political codes contradict the benevolence preached by Confucius, or does it?
