Ancient China ReviewI'm afraid that most people who encounter _Ancient China_ will do no more than look through the pictures. After all, it is a large book and many of the pictures are just absolutely gorgeous. If you think the picture of the 7000 terra-cotta warriors on pages 12 and 13 is impressive, wait till you turn the page to see the largest Buddha statue in the world. This one is over 230 feet tall and look down on the confluence of two rivers. Supposedly it took almost 100 to create this Buddha. I can see why the Chinese stayed at it so long. It's absolutely beautiful.

Such beauty is interspersed with history and culture in this book. The earliest Neolithic sites in China are found in the Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Guizhou provinces of southern China and date from the 10th and 9th millennium BC. No doubt some site will rival the most ancient sites of the Near East such as Jericho.

The Bronze Age in China matches that of other parts of the world. In China, the Three Dynasties, the Xia, the Shang, and the Zhou each rule in turn over huge areas of central China. The rule from 2300 BC to about 300 BC. This is the time of heroes with supernatural powers who perform legendary feats. Fu Xi invents writing, music, marriage, hunting, fishing, and animal-breeding techniques. Sui Ren invents fire. Zhuan Xu separates heaven from Earth.

In 221 BC came Qin after whom China was named. Qin organized the territories, unified systems of writing and money, established a law code which lasted 20 centuries, initiated numerous works projects, and completed the Great Wall of China.

Scarpari switches from politics to culture to art to a tour of the major archaeological sites of China. Scarpari dedicates a couple of pages to the murals in the tomb of Lou Rui. Several pages are dedicated to the terra-cotta figurines from the tomb of the First Emperor, Qin Shihuangdi, which have captured the attention of so many of us since they were first discovered. Smaller statuettes were found in the tomb of princess Xincheng. The statuettes were designed to assist and amuse her after her death.

You may want to just enjoy the pictures. Or you may decide that Scarpari has inspired you to learn a whole lot more about China's history and culture. Or you may decide that Scarpari has written a book that would be a great gift for a Chinese friend just like I did.Ancient China Overview
