Starr rejects the conventional habit in literary studies which lumps courtesan literature of the late Qing together as a homogeneous group of low quality literature. While never critically acclaimed, this broadly defined category of books enjoy broad circulation and enduring popularity. Her book is an effort to delineate the categories of analysis that can be applied to these works of varying styles and qualities. Taking six works from the period between 1840 and 1910, she analyzes them in terms of the author-narrator-protagonist relationship, strategies of characterization, and the relationship between the texts and the forms their printed editions took, in order to place them within the greater context of late Qing literary history.
