As with all of Yoshimura's work it gives a very personal view of the real lives behind some of the key events in Japanese history or the rigidities of the social structure of this facinating country. No heroics, no jingoism, just a heart rending portrayal of the life and emotions of a young teenage boy during an incredibly traumatic time. Too few of the late Akira Yoshimura's books have been translated into English. I hope that all of the remainder of his works will follow.
